Ollie.jpg 1 = Ollie. A young orphan boy, about 10, who sells oysters by the river (overhears dockworkers chatting, and sees what ships come in). He is illiterate but has a good memory of crests and logos, is extremely poor, and is often sickly due to exposure to the nasty river and utter lack of washing. He visits Kat for healing in exchange for news about new merchants and public figures who arrive by boat, since Kat often needs to purchase exotic goods to stock her enchantments store, and can turn a good profit selling her goods to newly arrived high-society folk who haven’t learned to bargain yet. However, even savvy nobles patronize her shop and provide a significant portion of her income.

Elenor.jpg 2 = Elenora Delagney. A blind elderly noblewoman who walks every single morning in the park and rests on the same bench to listen to songbirds. She has been heavily involved in high society goings-on for her entire life, and she trades gossip with Kat for enchanted trinkets/potions that make her feel younger. The old woman lives with her son and daughter-in-law and their infant son, who are fairly rich and respectable.

George_Graham.jpg 3 = George Graham. Kat’s landlord of over 5 years, the owner and namesake of Graham’s General Goods next door to her enchantments shop, man of about 40, friendly and cheerful, with a tendency to “accidentally” overhear his patrons’ personal business and read between the lines to draw accurate conclusions about their personal lives. His customers and acquaintances assume he’s a simple man with a simple life of owning a store that sells simple goods, and only a small handful of people know he’s a smidge too smart and cunning for such a tame life. Kat, living next door and hearing his door open and close in the darkest hours of the night, assumes he goes out drinking or gambling, but she’s not sure at all what his moonlight activities are, and she’s never asked.

BAG.png
Katherine (Kat) Enbütz is a woman of approximately 35 years, average in looks, with wavy black hair. She often wears black or gray, with a white cravat and white cuffs, and always carries a large damask bag full of Gods-know-what, but there’s clearly a lot of it in there.

Kat is not shy, but is reserved and usually reluctant to make herself noticed except when it serves her. While she is plain and easy to overlook when she chooses to be, especially when in costume of some inconspicuous character.

young_kat.jpg Her childhood from birth to age twenty was spent with a traveling gypsy caravan that performed plays on hastily-constructed wooden stages on the outskirts of various towns, as well as peddled handmade goods, both simple and enchanted. Kat helped out as a stagehand for the live shows and also did some acting in them during her teens, and she always helped her mother enchant jewelry, baubles, and potions to sell discreetly to fops in town who knew better than to get caught making a purchase from dirty gypsies. This is how she learned most of the enchantments she sells in her shop, as well as the art of the deal.

KAT.png Young Kat was never seen without her pet tuxedo cat, Mittens, whom a 5-year-old Kat had found as a kitten during a rainstorm, lost or abandoned under the knotty roots of a large tree. Kat fed Mittens fresh fish every day, and Mittens proved to be as intelligent and obedient as a dog. Mittens could always be found nearby wherever Kat went, and Kat’s bond with Mittens grew stronger as Kat’s childhood friends came and left, following their parents to different caravans or to settle down in cities. Through the hard life of a nomadic performer, Kat’s only consistent comfort was the loyalty of her dear Mittens, but the wheel of time stops for no love. Mittens died in her sleep on the first day of spring in Kat’s 20th year. Losing her precious Mittens, the only constant in her perpetually itinerant lifestyle, Kat suddenly felt uprooted and adrift. Kat packed up that day, borrowed coin from a few friends and family, and left on her own to settle down in “London”, in hopes that staying in one place for long enough would allow her the privilege of building strong, stable relationships.

old_woman.jpg Although Kat put down roots in “London” 15 years ago by opening an enchantments shop, the gypsy blood in her veins still gets restless when the North wind blows. Instead of physically moving her same self to a new location, Kat sates her desire for change by putting on a new persona and looking at the same world through new eyes. Kat’s small apartment above her enchantments shop is cluttered with various outfits she has used to literally walk in someone else’s shoes for a while. Her favorite persona is that of a mischievous old woman, and in fact, half of the time Kat runs her shop while in that persona. Many of her customers believe that the old woman is Kat’s mother or grandmother, an assumption Kat has neglected to correct because it pleases her.

Complications:
Illiterate – Growing up as a gypsy, Kat never needed to learn to read text, but she can certainly read faces. Even for keeping her shop, she need only count coin and remember her own bottle notations.
Hoarder – Kat’s apartment above her shop is a horrific mess of costumes, trinkets, and ingredients. She’s always lived alone and never had guests, so never saw a reason to tidy up when she’ d just have to pull things out of drawers again the next time she needed them.
